Though the text of this Hymn is not specific to the Easter season, I really like to program it at that time. Really, it is appropriate for any service of the year; it would even work beautifully for Christmas. This arrangement is an expanded version of the first draft of a commission by soprano, Andrea da Silva. I feel it ‘floats’ during the first half and then grows in intensity til the end.

Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight,
And all the stars in Heaven above;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
And brings to all the world His love.

Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands,

     This missionary anthem is appropriate for any occasion requiring a little evangelical fire. Parley P. Pratt’s wonderful imagery was a great inspiration in creating this work.

The Text:
Behold the harvest wide extends,
The fields are white all o’er the plain,
The tares in bundles must be bound
While we with care secure the grain.

How rich is the treasure, ye saints of the Lord,
Entrusted to us as made known by His word,
The plan of Salvation, the Gospel of grace,
To publish a broad unto Adam’s lost race!

Shall we repine when Jesus calls,
or count it sacrifice to spend our lives,
Or lose them for the Gospel sake,
When He, our Savior, did the same,
Without a place to lay His Head?

Shall we behold the nations doomed
to sword, and famine, blood and fire,
Yet not the least exertion make,
but from the scene in peace retire?

This Christmas arrangement combines the Gregorian chant “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” with the Renaissance melody greensleeves for which the words “What Child is This?” were written. I hope and feel this goes beyond a mere medley of tunes; the modality of each enhances the other as well as the combined message.

I’ve set this for intermediate/advanced SSAB choir a cappella. I know this is an unusual combination, but I think very practical. Many SAB choirs are perfectly capable of singing challenging music, but lack the amount of men to do SATB arrangements effectively. Sopranos are usually plentiful. I plan to write more for this kind of choir/quartet in the future.
